Van Rosen studied at Miller's studio in Kiev. In 1921 he moved to Kisenev where he studied at the Municipal Art School. In 1923 he went to New York and worked as an industrial designer, stage designer, author, and lecturer. He was granted U.S. citizenship in 1930.
