Marina Romanoff was a daughter of Grand Duke Petr Nikolaevich of Russia and his wife Grand Duchess Militza Nikolaevna, princess of Montenegro. She was born in Nice, France, but grew up in Znamenka, her father's summer palace near Petergof. She first studied painting at het senior school in Yalta and then in St. Petersburg with Kardovskii. She escaped in 1919 from Sebastopol, Crimea, and went to France. In 1927 she married prince Aleksandr Golitsyn (Galytzine, 1886-1974).
