Repin was born into a military family. He entered military school in 1854 and in 1856 studied under Ivan Bunakov, a local iconpainter. He began to paint around 1860. In 1874–1876 he took part in the Itinerant exhibitions in Saint Petersburg. He was awarded the title of academician in 1876.He taught at the Higher Art School attached to the Academy of Arts from 1894. In 1898 he purchased an estate, the Penates, in Kuokkala (Finland), now Repino (St Petersburg) where he died and is buried. |
