In 1896, Remizov started to study natural sciences in the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics of the Moscow University. The following year he was arrested at a student demonstration and permanently expelled from the university, and exiled to Penza for two years. Subsequent arrests, imprisonment, and exile took Remizov to Vologda, Ust-Sysolsk, Kharkov, Kiev, and Odessa. ln 1905, he finally received permission to settle in St. Petersburg, where he remained for sixteen years. After the Revolution of 1917, Remizov worked at the St. Petersburg Theatrical Department. He left Russia in 1921 for Estonia and moved in 1923 to Paris, where he remained until his death. |
