Putov spent his childhood in Siberia until 1947. He gruduated from High School in Noginsk (Moscow). From 1957 to 1959 he studied medicine at the Moscow Medical Institute but left of his own accord. From 1959 to 1962 he served in the army where he began to paint. In 1963 he enterd the Moscow Architectural Institute wghere he graduated in 1969. From 1973 to 1985 he lived and worked in Haifa (Israel) and from 1986 to 2001 in Paris. In 2001 he move to Brittany and lived in the village Plélan-le-Grand.
