Vladimir Polunin studied art in Munich and Paris before he came to London, where he worked with Boris Anisfeldt on the designs for Palace Theatre in 1914. From 1918 onwards he worked for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, where he was responsible for realising stage sets from the artists' original designs. Later, he became head of the department of stage painting at the Slade School, and exerted considerable influence on English stage design.
