Petrusov began to be engaged in photography from the age of 14. In 1924 he started working for the Soiuz Photo agency and for the journal USSR in Construction. During the Second World War he worked as a photojournalist and travelled to several fronts, and witnessed the ending of the war in Berlin. After the war he worked as a photographer for the news agency Novosti.
