Petroff studied from 1909 to 1914 at the drawing school of the Imaperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg. During his study he worked as an interior designer and a scenographer. In 1919 he settled in Paris where he studied at the Academie Cormon. In 1923 he moved to Nice.
