Pasternak studied at the Art School of Odessa and 1881 - 1885 law at the university of Moscow. From 1894 till 1918 he was a professor at the Art Academy in Moscow. In 1921 he emigrated to Berlin and in 1938 he left for England and settled in Oxford.
