OST, the Society of Easel Artists was an exhibiting society formed in 1924, active until 1932. It included some of the most talented artists of the post-revolutionary generation and was influential in the 1920s. David Shterenberg, its chairman and guiding spirit, defined its aims as opposing abstraction and the genre pictures. The members of the Society of Easel Painters were committed to a Revolutionary Socialism that strongly rejected non-representational painting. The group, as well as all other creative associations, ended in 1932, when, by decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU, all art groups were eliminated. |
