Osorgin, born as Mikhail Ilin, studied Law at the Moscow University. As a lawyer he was socially involved and defended farmers and orphans. After his arrest in 1905 and a short stay in prison he fled to Italy. In 1916 he returned to Moscow where he worked as a journalist. In late 1922 he was expelled from the Soviet Union and settled in France.
