Jules Olitski born as Jevel
Demikovskii was a Russian-born American painter. A few month after his
birth, his father, a government commissar, was executed and in 1923 the
mother and grandmother fled to the USA. In 1926 his mother married Hyman
Olitsky and Jevel Demikovskii became Jules Olitski. He studied at the
Pratt Institute, the National Academy of Design and the beaux Arts
Institute all in New York. After the war he went to paris and studied at
the Ossip zadkine School and the Academie de la Grande Chaumière.
