Nivinskii studied from 1893 to 1899 at the Stroganov School in Moscow under I. Zoltovskii, In 1903-1904 and 1907 he travelled to Italy. From 1908 to1910 he studied at the Moscow College for Painting under Iuon. In 1917 he worked as a monumentalist for example in the Metropol Hotel and the Kiev station in Moscow. In 1921 he worked as a theatre designer for Vakhtangov. In 1924 he was head supervisor for the building of the Lenin mausoleum. 1921-1930 het taught at State Institute for Technical Art.
