Monin studied from 1943 to 1950 at the Moscow School of Art. In 1956 he graduated from the Moscow Architecture Institute. He startedcworking as an illustrator for the journals Murzilka and Pioner. In his earlier career he designed illustrations for children's books together with V. Losin and V. Pertsov. For the publisher Detskii Mir and its successor Malysh he illustrated over 200 children's books.
