Mochalov studied at the Astrakhan Art School and, as one of the most abled students he went, in 1922, to Leningrad where he studied under Kotov and Shillingovskii at the Leningrad Academy and graduated in 1926. In 1927 he started working as an illustrator for Detgiz.
