After graduating from the Moscow Polygraphic Institute in 1955, Medvedev started working for the Sovetskii pistatel (Soviet Writer) publishing house, where he worked all his life, rising to the position of chief artist. He designed hundreds of books, not only for this publishing house but also in several others. Medvedev revived the technique of silhouette illustration, cutting out figures from black paper. Another of his favourite technique was the use of documentary photography.
