From 1885 to 1899, Maliavin studied icon painting in the St. Panteleimon monastery, Mount Athos. He worked in Moscow until 1918 and after the revolution on his estate near Riazan. In 1922 he emigrated to Paris via Riga. He later settled in Nice.
