Makarenko graduated 1963 from the Dnepropetrovsk Art School, but as his work was considered to be formalist, he was denied to continue his art studies in the Ukraine. In 1963 he went to Leningrad where he 1969 graduated from the Mukhina Art Institute as a muralist. He befriended non conformist artists as Mikhail Chemiakin, Vladimir Iankilevskii and others. In 1973 he was forced to move to Tallinn. In 1976 he had his first solo exhibition in the Hardy Gallery in Paris. In 1981 he was granted leave for the Soviet Union and settled in Paris.
