Liberts was born on the Tirsa Estate where his father was a servant (kellermeister). From 1907-1911 he studied drawing under Madernieks in Riga and 1911-1912 at the Stroganov Institute in Moscow and 1912-1915 at the Kazan Art School. In 1915 he returned to Moscow to study under I. Mashkov. 1923-1944 he taught in Riga. In 1944 he emigrated to Germany and 1950 to the USA.
