Lentulov, a son of a parish priest, studied at the Penza Church institute and seminary 1889-1898 and 1898-1900 he studied drawing at the Seliverstov Institute in Penza. In 1900 he moved to Kiev and studied at the Kiev Art School under Menk, Pimonenko until 1905 when he returned to Penza to study at the Penza Art School under Afanasev. In 1906 he left for St. Petersburg to take private lessons with Kardovskii. There he met Kulbin and started his experimental works. In 1910 he moved to Moscow and befriended Konchalovskii and Mashkov and became a founding member of the group Bubnovyi Valet (Knave of Diamonds). |
