Tamara de Lempicka was born Maria Gorskaia to a wealthy Russian  Jewish attorney. In 1912 her parents divorced and she went to live with her aunt in St. Petersburg where she married Tadeusz Lempicki. Here she also got her first art education, problay at the Imperial Art Academy. In 1918 she fled with her husband to Paris.
