Lavinskii studied 1905-1912 Institute for Architecture in Baku and 1918-1920 at the Vchutemas in Petrograd. He was a member of LEF 1919-1920. He was teacher at the Vchutemas in Saratov and 1920-1926 at the Vchutemas in Moscow.
