Khystymov graduated 1955 from the Moscow Polygraphic Institute where he had studied under P. Zakharov. In 1956 he started working for the children's magazine Murzilka. He was a prolific illustrator not only for Murzilka but also for Veselye Kartinki. He often designed illustrations in cooperation with Erik Benyaminson (1932-2007). Kyshtynov was a laureate of many prizes for his illustrations.
