Kutateladze studied at the Caucasian School for the Encouragement of Arts and at the drawing school of N.Sklifosovskii in Tiflis (now Tbilisi). He was imprisoned for participating of the war of independence in Georgia in 1921. from 1922 to 1926 he studied at the Tiflis Academy of Art with G.Gabashvili and E.Lansere. He started working in the office of the Satirical magazine Nialgi (Crocodile) in Tiflis. He bevcame a co-founder of the association of Revolutionary artists of Georgia. He tought at the Tiflis academy of art and became in 1959 rector of the academy.
