Kudriakov studied photography from 1965 to 1968 in Leningrad. As his father had been arrested he was not able to worked as a free lance photographer and earned his living as a boiler operator. His application to emigrate caught the attention of the KGB making it hard for him to find regular jobs. In his photographs of Leningrad he was the first to show the ugliness of the city.
