Red cropland
was a Soviet literary and artistic illustrated weekly magazine,
supplement to the newspaper
Izvestiya.
The magazine, edited by A.V.Lunacharsky, Yu.M.Steklov and others,
published mainly small works, poems, stories, essays, excerpts from
novels and stories. At first the covers were adorned with photographs or
with photo collages, later the covers were colour designs by well known
artists such as Aleksandr Deineka, Yurii Pimenov and the Stenberg
brothers.
In 1930 and 1931, the magazine faced difficulties due to the lack of
paper and an intense struggle with the Union of Proletarian Writers
(RAPP). From
1930 the magazine began to be published three times a month, and in
December 1931 the magazine was closed.
