In 1919 and 1920 Kostrov studied philology at the Kazan University. In 1921 he returned to Viatka where het studied art and met Evgenii Charushing who advised him to study at the Leningrad art school. In Leningrad he worked with Mikhail Matiushin and his group of artists of whom he wrote his memoirs: M. Matiushin and his disciples.
