Konovalov entered in 1936 the Moscow Surikov Institute where he met the artist Tatiana Kovrigina, which later became his wife. In 1942 he fought in Stalingrad. In 1944 and 1945 he travelled to Warsaw and Prague as part of the War Art Studio. In 1947 he graduated from the Moscow Art Institute. He lived and worked in Moscow.
