Kononov studied at the Moscow State Art School in memory of 1905. While still a student, he married Natalia Prager, the daughter of the famous Russian artist Vladimir Prager. Igor Kononov's early exhibitions (1960-1970) were not only in the Soviet Union, but also in Canada (Montreal) and Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto). In 1975, Igor Kononov was stripped of his Soviet citizenship and emigrated to the United States with his family. Before he left Russia, he illustrated over 250 books.
