Koltsov studied from 1907 to 1917 at the Moscow Stroganov School of Art. From 1928 to 1930 he lived in Paris were two exhibitions of his works were held. After returning a solo exhibition was held in Moscow, which presented drawings, paintings, and sculptures made in Paris, as well as a series of 46 grotesque watercolours.
