Kochergin graduated 1960 from the Leningrad Theatrical Institute. From 1963 to 1966 he worked for the  Lenigrad Comedy Theatre and from 1966 to 1972 for the Komissarzhevskaia Theatre. After 1972 he worked for the Leningrad Gorky Theatre.
