In 1912 and 1913 Kirnarskii studied at the Higher School of Architecture in Paris and from 1917 to 1919 at the Petrograd Academy of Art under I. Fomin. From 1919 to 1922 he studied in Kiev at the Academy of Arts under G. Narbut. In the 1920s he started designing and illustrating books. He was a master of the cover and his designs stand out  for their detailed and logical style executed in a flat and decorative manner. He died during the siege of Leningrad.
