Kantorovich worked in his youth as an assitant to the a theatre artist in St. Petersburg. Since 1928 he worked as an artist in the theaters of leni ngrad and as an illustrator for magazines, newspapers and books. In July 1932 he joined the crew of the ice-breaker 'Siribriakov' on a polar expedition. In 1941 he was killed in the bloody battle of Vyborg.
