Boris Kalaushin was born in Leningrad in the family of a Pushkin scholar, M. M. Kalaushin, who founded the national museum of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin
He started to study at the Art School of the Academy of Arts in 1939 and then entered the Academy of Arts from which he graduated in 1956. Kalaushin was a researcher in Russian Avant-Garde and founded the group Apollon that organized exhibitions of Russian Avat-Garde artist. He published also some almanacs under the name Apollon.
