Kalashnikov graduated 1949 from the Moscow Higher Art (Stroganov) Institute were he had studied wood-engraving under D.Sobolev, I. Pavlov and M. Matorin. He started working as and illustrator for the publisher Sovetskii pisatel (The soviet writer) and after 1953 for other publishers. Next to his illustrations is known for his stamp designs and his bookplates.
