Gushchin, son of a teacher's family, grew up in Perm. 1910-17 he studied at the Moscow school of Art under Kastankin, Maliutin and Korovin. After the revolution he left for Perm and in 1919 he went to Harbin. In 1922 he arrived in Paris. In 1934 he went to live in Monaco and in 1947 he returned to the USSR. 1947-1965 he lived and worked as a restorer in Saratov.
