Gryuntal had no formal art education. he worked 1913-14 in the cinematographic studio of Khanzhonkov and started working as an illustrator for several Moscow journals. He also illustrated children's book for the State Publishers. In 1930 he joined the photographic section of the October group headed by Rodchenko.
