Victor Kallinik Gousseff was born in Kalach-na-Donu in 1892 (1893) in a family of 'Old Believers'. He graduated in 1909 from the Rostov art school where he had studied under Ivan Bogatyrev. He continued his art education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture but left Russia in 1912 to evade military conscription and settled in Paris. In the 1920s he settled in Barcelona where he died in 1980.
