Golikov was born into a family of icon painters. At the age of 7 the family move to the famous icon workshop of the Safonov brothers in Palekh. After the revolution golikov worked for some years as a scenographer. In 1921 he started working as a miniaturist working on paper-mache. Both his sons (Georgii (1920-1941) and Nikolai (1924-2011) worked as miniature painters in Palekh. In 1968 the Golikov Museum was founded in Palekh.
