Following their publication of Kolkhoz (see nr. 151) Rimma Gerlovina and Valeri Gerlovin mounted an exhibition at the New York Franklin Furnace Gallery. Up to 1984 this exhibition, dealing with the contemporary Moscow Samizdat art, subsequently travelled to different American and Canadian cities. The Gerlovins wrote an article Russian Samizdat Books for the periodical Flue, (No.2, Spring 1982), published by the gallery. The exhibition and the article led to this book edited by Doria. It contains an introduction by Bowlt on Russian avant-garde books and by Bojko on the three waves of Russian emigration in the 20th Century. Russian samizdat art sketches the background and development of the (unofficial) artist book in Soviet Russia from the futurist books via the tradition of self-publication (i.e. samizdat) by Kruchenykh and Burliuk to the contemporary samizdat art, which transforms the book into an object. For the limited edition of 125 copies, Valeri Gerlovin designed a box containing a copy of the book without its dust jacket and a portfolio with 6 silk-screens by the main artists of the exhibition, Bakhchanyan, Rimma Gerlovina, Valeri Gerlovin, Khudyakov, Chernyshev and the duo Komar and Melamid.
