Erté was the son of admiral Petr Tyrtov. He studied in 1906 under Repin and in 1912 at the Academie Julian in Paris under Laurens. In 1913 he drew the first designs for the theatre. From 1913 he used the French pronunciation of his initials as the signature: Erté. From 1915 he worked for Harper's Bazaar and from 1916 for Vogue. During World War II he became almost forgotten but after his 1967 exhibition in the Grosvenor Gallery Londen he again became famous. |
