Son of an artisan, Mark Epshtein show artistic abilities at an early age. From 1911- to 1918 het studied sculpture at the Kiev College of Art under F. Balavensky and attended classes at the studio of Alexandra Exter. In 1918 he was one of the founders of the Kultur-lige in Kiev. In 1928 he was elected a memeber of the Ukrainian artistic council (GOSET in Kharkov. In the early 1930 Epshtein became subject of severe criticism and his art school and the Kultur-lige were dissolved in 1932. Epshtein left Kiev and settled in Moscow where he headed a workshop for park and decorative sculptures.
