Elkin studied 1923-28 at the Moscow Vkhutein under S. Gerasimov and V. Favorskii. He joined the constructivists with photomontage and poster-designs. He designed in the 30's children's books with photomontage but later he illustrated children's books in the soviet socialist realist style.
