Sonia Delaunay was born as Sarah Shtern and changed her name into Sonja Terk after moving to St. Petersburg from the Ukraine in 1890 into the household of her mother's brother, the lawyer Henri Terk. In 1903 she travelled to Karlsruhe where she studied design under Schmidt- Reutter and in 1905 she enrolled at the Académie de la Palette in Paris. In 1910 she married Robert Delaunay and established a shared studio until 1935. During the 1920s she worked intensely with textile design. From 1935 to 1937 she and her husband worked on a vast mural for the International Exhibition of 1937 for which they received the Gold Medal.
