Dekhterev studied 1921-22 at Emelianov's studio in Krasnodar and after under Mashkov and Kardovskii at the Moscow Vkhutein. From 1931 he became one of Russia's  prolific book illustrators. He was head designer of the of the publishing house Detskaia Literatura. He taught at the Moscow Institute of art  and was winner of many prizes. He became an Honoured Artist of the RSFSR in 1947 and People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1966.
