Chizh, an abbreviation for
Chrezvychaino interesnyi zhurnal (Extraordinarily interesting
journal), was published from 1930 to June 1941, the beginning of the
Second World War in Russia. It was published by the Leningrad Detgiz
and was an organ to the Pioneers movement. In total 138 issues of the
magazine were published. Despite censorship, prosecution (the grievous
destiny of many writers and artists) the contents of the magazines were
unusual for those times: full of funny ideas and a huge sense of
spiritual freedom. In 1928 Marshak became the
nominal editor of the children’s magazines Ezh [Hedgehog] and in
1930 of Chizh [Siskin].
