Chermnykh studied 1911 - 1917 at the Moscow School of painting, sculpture and architecture under K. Korovin and S. Maliutin. In 1917 he started working as a caricaturist for several journals. In 1919, together V. Maiakovskii and I Maliutin, he  designed and created the famous Rosta windows. In 1922 he started working for the magazin Krokodil until 1939. After he worked mainly as a poster designer in Moscow.
