Chem (Aleksandr Shemetov) studied at the Rostov art school. In 1918 he joined the Whirte Army and with his company he left Russia in 1920 for Constantinople. In 1921-23 Chem lived in Tunis. In 1924 he travel over Algiers to Paris. He illustrated for the journal Ukhvat and Satirikon. He illustrated two albums for Les albums du Pere Castor.
