Shelkovskii (Chelkovski) started working as a restorer of icons in Moscow and Novgorod. In 1969 he began paining without a formal art education. In 1976 he emigrated to France. He became one of the editors-in-chief of the magazine A-Ya. He lives and works in Paris.
