Evgenii Charushin was the son of an architect. He studied at the technical institute for art in Viatka (later Kirov) until 1918 when he had to serve in the Red Army. 1922-1926 he studied at the Academy of Arts in Petrograd/Leningrad. From 1927 on he worked as an illustrator for the state publishing house. Charushin illustrated more than 150 children's books on animal life.
